Catalina Island weekend scuba package with Scuba Life

Trip guide

What is Catalina diving?

Santa Catalina Island sits off the coast of Southern California and has been a dive destination for generations. Water clarity, kelp forests, garibaldi, horn sharks, and sea lions make it feel like a real trip even though you are still close to home.

Most divers base out of Avalon on the island. You arrive by ferry, walk a small harbor town, and dive sites a short boat ride away. It is a good fit for training, refresher dives, and fun diving without flying somewhere tropical.

A Catalina weekend package bundles the parts that are annoying to book solo: ferry seats and hotel nights. Scuba Life lists these packages when a scheduled trip is live on our website.

Trip guide

Why SoCal divers choose Catalina

Los Angeles, Orange County, and Ventura divers can reach the ferry in a reasonable drive, cross the channel, and be diving the same day or the next. That makes Catalina the default ocean step after pool training.

Kelp forest diving here is the real California experience. Long fronds, light filtering through, and fish everywhere. Many Open Water students finish certification dives on the island because conditions and scenery beat a lot of mainland sites.

Weekend packages also work for certified divers who want a short break. You are not signing up for a full course. You are getting transport, a place to sleep, and time on the water.

Trip guide

What the weekend package includes

The Catalina Weekend package includes round trip ferry transportation and a two night stay at the Hermosa Hotel in Avalon. Hotel lodging is a shared room with a Jack and Jill style bathroom between rooms.

Everything is priced per individual. If two people want to share the same room, each person must still buy their own package. That is how hotel and ferry inventory are held for the group.

This overview does not show dollar amounts. When a trip is open, the listing under Trips shows the current rate, deposit rules if any, and the book now flow.

Training, certified divers, and guided dives

Some Catalina weekends line up with Scuba Life training. Students may be finishing pool work, doing certification dives, or adding ocean time with instructors who know the sites.

Other packages are aimed at certified divers who want the ferry and hotel handled and plan to dive on their own or with buddies. Certified divers are welcome on the trips we post.

Not enrolled in a class but want a guided dive? That is usually an add on for an additional fee. Contact us before you book so we can tell you what is possible for that specific weekend.

Trip guide

What a weekend usually feels like

You catch the ferry from the mainland, land in Avalon, and check into the Hermosa. Evenings are casual. Mornings are gear, walk to the boat or meet point, and get in the water. You are on island time, not rushing a commute home.

Dive plans depend on weather, ferry timing, and who is on the trip. Training groups follow course schedules. Fun divers might hit classic Avalon area sites or join arranged dives if they booked extras through the shop.

Pack for cool water. A 7mm wetsuit or similar is common for SoCal divers year round. Bring personal gear you already own. Rental and class gear rules are on the trip listing if training is involved.

Rooming and special requests

Sharing a room, bathroom setup, or mobility needs should go through Contact Us as early as you can. Hotels and ferries lock inventory. Late requests are harder to honor.

The package only applies to the departure windows published on that trip page. If the site lists one weekend product, other dates are not the same package even if Catalina is always a great place to dive.

We want the trip to run smooth for everyone on board. Clear communication up front saves headaches at the dock.

Trip guide

Policies worth knowing

After hotel accommodations are confirmed for your booking, the package is non refundable. Read that on the trip listing before you pay and make sure your travel plans are solid.

Weather can delay boats or change which site is safe. Flexibility helps. Scuba Life and captains prioritize safety over forcing a dive in bad conditions.

Cancellation, deposits, and any other legal terms are always on the specific trip page you are booking, not on this general overview.

Trip guide

Who is this package for?

Good fits: certified divers planning a short island trip, students bundled into a class weekend, and locals who want ferry and hotel taken care of in one purchase.

Less ideal if you only want a single day dive with no overnight stay, or if you expect a private room without coordinating through the shop first. Those cases need a conversation with us.

How to book with Scuba Life

Scuba Life trains divers in Southern California and runs Catalina weekends when they are on the calendar. Check the Trips page for what is open right now.

Still earning your certification? Look at our Open Water page for how pool, e learning, and Catalina ocean dives fit together. Already certified? Grab the weekend listing when it is live or email us with questions.

We are a real shop with instructors and trip coordinators, not just a booking form. Reach out if you are unsure which product matches what you want to do on the island.
