Scuba diving in Los Angeles with Scuba Life

Location guide

Why LA is a great place to learn

Los Angeles County has easy access to training pools, harbor towns, and Catalina Island. You learn skills close to home, then finish certification in real kelp forests instead of only practicing in a pool.

Water here is cooler and livelier than tropical postcards. That sounds harder, but it makes you a stronger beginner. When you travel later, calm warm water feels easy.

Scuba Life serves LA County divers with courses, trips, and a shop that knows local conditions.

How training usually works

Most new divers study e learning on their own, train in a pool in the greater LA area, then complete ocean dives on a Catalina weekend with ferry and hotel included in many Open Water packages.

You are not driving to random beaches alone. Instructors schedule pool days, review skills, and coordinate island logistics so the path is clear.

Certified divers skip the student path and join trips, rent gear, or take Advanced and Rescue courses when ready.

Location guide

Catalina from Los Angeles

Catalina Island is the classic SoCal ocean classroom. Short ferry ride, Avalon harbor town, kelp, garibaldi, and often sea lions on training dives.

Open Water students frequently certify at Casino Point Dive Park or nearby sites. Advanced courses also use the island for five dive weekends.

Weekend packages with ferry and Hermosa Hotel are explained on our Catalina overview page. Trip listings show what is open to book.

Boats and local diving

Certified divers can access boat diving from Long Beach, San Pedro, and other LA area harbors depending on the season and trip calendar.

Local ocean diving builds experience before big trips. It also keeps skills fresh between vacations.

Scuba Life posts trips on the website when charters or group travel are scheduled, including Catalina weekends and liveaboard style destinations.

Who we work with

First time try divers, Open Water students, Advanced and Rescue candidates, and certified divers who want trips or gear advice.

Junior programs may be available where standards allow. Medical questionnaires and swim comfort requirements apply to everyone before water training.

Some students live in LA but work anywhere in SoCal. Pool sites are chosen for access across the region.
