What Is Enriched Air (Nitrox)?

Enriched Air—or Nitrox—is scuba gas with a higher percentage of oxygen than standard air. Most recreational nitrox blends are between 32% and 40% oxygen, compared to roughly 21% in regular air.

The main benefit is longer no-decompression bottom times at a given depth, which means more time underwater on the same dive profile. Many divers also report feeling less fatigued after nitrox dives.

Nitrox does not let you dive deeper. It changes how you plan and execute dives within recreational limits, which is why proper training is required before using it.

What You Will Learn

eLearning covers oxygen exposure, partial pressure concepts, maximum operating depths for different blends, and how nitrox affects dive planning compared to air.

You learn to analyze tank contents with an oxygen analyzer, verify the blend before every dive, and set your dive computer for the correct gas mix.

Instructors review the academic material with you so the theory is clear before you handle real cylinders and analyzers.

What the Course Includes

eLearning materials for the Enriched Air Diver curriculum, completed at your own pace.

Instructor-led review of nitrox theory, oxygen analysis procedures, and dive computer configuration.

Practical session analyzing enriched air cylinders and confirming gas contents before use.

Official Enriched Air Diver specialty certification once all requirements are met.

Who Can Take the Course?

You must be a certified Open Water Diver (or enrolled in Open Water with nitrox added to your training package). Minimum age requirements apply.

Nitrox is one of the most popular specialty courses because the benefits apply immediately to everyday recreational diving—Catalina weekends, boat dives, and travel trips.

Some Scuba Life Open Water students add Peak Performance Buoyancy and Nitrox during their initial training, which can adjust their Advanced Open Water path later.

Why Divers Choose Nitrox

On Catalina weekend dives and local boat charters, nitrox often means more bottom time before reaching no-decompression limits—especially on deeper profiles.

Liveaboard operators frequently offer nitrox, and having the certification means you can take advantage of it without extra checkout dives on arrival.

Nitrox also counts toward one of the five specialty certifications required for Master Scuba Diver, making it a practical choice early in your continuing education path.

Safety and Responsibility

You never dive an enriched air cylinder unless you have personally verified its contents with an analyzer. This is a core rule of nitrox diving.

Higher oxygen percentages have shallower maximum operating depths. Your training covers how to identify the correct blend for your planned dive depth.

Scuba Life instructors emphasize real-world habits—checking labels, logging analysis, and configuring your computer correctly every time.
